Stress has been studied scientifically for many years but Selye (1974), the father of stress research, laid the foundation for further studies on stress after he developed the theory of the general adaptation syndrome.
Too much stress can cause serious problems, even if the demand eliciting it is viewed in a positive manner. Researchers indicated excessive stress has negative effects on both the physical and mental state of many individuals (Cardena et al., 2013; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Puterman & Epel, 2012; Suárez, Feramisco, Koo, & Steinhoff, 2012; Trueba et al., 2013).
Chronic stress has been linked to weakening of the immune system and has also been found to exacerbate illnesses in people (Puterman & Epel, 2012). Moreover, stress has emotional and cognitive effects, and it is associated with several negative consequences such as depression and anxiety (Pillay & Ngcobo, 2010; Trueba et al., 2013).
